Every year, on the 8th of March, the International Women’s Day is commemorated globally, to reflect on the progress made towards gender equality while reaffirming commitments to advancing the rights and opportunities of women and girls. For Research Enterprise Systems (RES), this occasion provides an opportunity to evaluate how knowledge production, transmission, consumption and policy engagement contribute to inclusive social development. The theme for this year, “Give to Gain” significantly highlight the need for more strategic investment in women’s participation and leadership within research ecosystems and how this in return will improve innovation, policy effectiveness and societal progress.
Historically, women have faced structural barriers within academic and research environments, including limited access to funding, under-representation in leadership roles, and gender biases that constrain professional advancement. Addressing these challenges requires intentional actions by research organizations to create enabling environments where women researchers, scholars and innovators can contribute to, and benefit maximally from generation and application of knowledge.
As the global community marks International Women’s Day, research ecosystems must move beyond symbolic recognition toward sustained institutional action. The theme “Give to Gain” serves as a reminder that investing in women researchers today will yield lasting benefits for knowledge production, innovation systems and public policy. By fostering inclusive research environments and championing gender equity in knowledge ecosystems, research institutions can play a unique role in shaping a future where the contributions of women are fully recognized and harnessed for sustainable development.
Ultimately, the path toward stronger research systems and more equitable societies lies in the willingness of institutions to give opportunity, support and recognition so that the society as a whole can gain better ideas, stronger institutions and inclusive progress.
