Empowering Early-Career Researchers for Policy Impact in Africa

As Africa navigates complex development challenges, the need for data-driven decision-making has never been more critical. In response, Research Enterprise Systems (RES) hosted a One-Day Capacity Building Workshop on Innovative Policy-Oriented Research on May 22, 2025, at its Abuja head office, equipping early-career researchers, policy analysts, and development practitioners with the tools to translate research into actionable policies.

Under the theme Innovative Policy-Oriented Research, the workshop brought together participants from the National Assembly, academia, development organizations, and the private sector, reflecting the growing demand for evidence-based approaches in public discourse and national development.

Key sessions included:

  • Understanding Policy-Oriented Research, led by Prof. Fatai Aremu, highlighting the need for contextualized, actionable, and timely research to inform policy while bridging the gap between academic rigor and practical policymaking.

  • Navigating Nigeria’s Policy Landscape, facilitated by Amb. Chibuzo Okereke, providing insights into Nigeria’s policymaking structures and strategies for researchers to influence policy effectively.

  • Constructive Feedback for Research Impact, led by the RES team, focusing on fostering collaboration and refining research through effective feedback practices.

The workshop also featured interactive group activities, role-play exercises, and reflective discussions, creating a dynamic environment for learning and practical application.

Participant testimonials highlighted the workshop’s transformative value, emphasizing increased confidence in engaging with policymakers and producing research that drives real-world impact. The event concluded with the presentation of certificates and a call to action for participants to champion evidence-informed practices in their various spheres.

By investing in the next generation of researchers, RES continues to strengthen Africa’s policy ecosystem, ensuring that research serves as a catalyst for sustainable, inclusive development across the continent.
